JOSEPH HERBERS

Mass of the Christian burial for Joseph Herbers, 100, of Halbur, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, January 19, at St. Augustine Church in Halbur.

Mr. Herbers died Sunday, January 14, 1990, at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning.

Burial will be at St. Augustine Cemetery in Halbur.

Celebrant will be the Rev. Eugene Ceperley.

Lector for the Mass will be Randy Dalhoff. Mass servers will be Matt, Keith, and Kent Pottebaum. Gift bearers will be Michelle Lane, Joan Halbur, and Tammy Dalhoff.

Casket bearers will be Brian Riesberg, Larry Petsche, Harold Rotert, Mark Herbers, Brian Esser, and John Dalhoff.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. There will be a scriptural prayer service at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home by St. Augustine Parish.

Mr. Herbers, survived by six children, Helene (Mrs. Clarus) Heithoff of Manning; Margaret (Mrs. Harold) Petsche of Petersburg, Nebraska; Marie (Mrs. Joseph) Rotert of Lidderdale; Orry Herbers, and his wife, Berdine, of Las Vegas, Nevada; Trudy, and her husband, Roland Esser, of West Des Moines; and Edna, and her husband, Elmer Dalhoff, of Halbur; 30 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Herbers of Carroll; and a sister, Teresa Dozier of Denison.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret, in 1958; one grandchild, Cheryl Heithoff; three brothers, John, Edward and Bernard Herbers; three sisters, Rose Herbers, Catherine Herbers, and Clara Gordon; a half-brother, Henry Herbers; three half-sisters, Anna (Sister Justiniana), Frances Venteicher and Mary Herbers; and three sons-in-law.

Mr. Herbers was born on April 10, 1889, in Carroll, Iowa, a son of John and Theresia (Bauer) Herbers. In 1896, he moved with his family to a farm south of Halbur. He attended country school near Halbur and St. Augustine School in Halbur.

At an early age, he developed an interest in the harness business and woodworking. He was employed by Matt Friedman Harness Shop in Halbur, Nelson Brothers Harness Shop in Dow City and Heider Manufacturing Co. in Carroll.

On February 10, 1914, he was married to Margaret Werder at St. Augustine Church in Halbur by the Rev. John Baumler. The couple farmed near Halbur and operated a farm dairy business from 1924 until 1953.

In 1934, he also bought the Shoe Repair and Harness Shop in Halbur and repaired shoes in Halbur until he moved to Lidderdale in 1965. He remained in Lidderdale until 1979 and then made his home with his children until he entered the Manning Plaza in March 1984.

He was a member of St. Augustine Parish in Halbur.

Throughout the years he maintained his interest in different phases of photography, leather craft, and woodworking.
