Mr. Lorenzen was an old settler in Jefferson Township, having lived in the old home continuously for forty-five years. He was a successful farmer, a good neighbor and a kind father.
Lorenz Lorenzen was born in Schleswig, Germany, on April 3, 1857, son of Thomas and Christina (Martinsen) Lorenzen. At the age of seventeen he left his home and fatherland for the United States. He first came to Clinton County, Iowa, but soon afterward located in Crawford County, in this state. In 1886, he moved into Shelby County, and bought eighty-two acres in section 7, Jefferson Township, on which he resided until his death. He later increased his farm by 100 acres.
Mr. Lorenzen was married in 1883 to Cathrina Clausen, also a native of Germany. To this union were born ten children, all of whom survive their parents. They are Mrs. Henry Ehrichs or Flandreau, South Dakota; Mrs. Bernard Thomsen of Porter, Minnesota; Tom Lorenzen of Lyle, Minnesota; William Lorenzen of Manilla; Mrs. Julius Ranniger of Manning; Mrs. Fred Boyens of Irwin; Mrs. Louis Ranniger of Manning; John Lorenzen of Manilla; Edward Lorenzen of Irwin; and Mrs. Edward Steen of Botna. He also leaves 22 grandchildren and one great-grand-child.
Mrs. Lorenzen was killed in a runaway about 25 years ago.
The deceased was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church of his native country.
Funeral services were conducted from the home and from the M.E. Church at Irwin, on Friday afternoon, with A.C. Itse in charge. The body was laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery besides that of his wife, who preceded him in death on October 17, 1906.
The songs were sung by a mixed quartet, consisting of Mr. Ernest Farrell, Mrs. Fred Ruhs, Mrs. Melvin Constable and A.C. Itse, with Mrs. Leroy Morgan at the piano. The following acted as pallbearers. Richard Martens, Nick Hanson, John Hansen, Emil Hansen, Louis Kuchel, and Henry Meyer.
All of the children were present at the funeral.
