ORVILLE "BUD" HARRIS

Orville "Bud'' Harris, 81, of Perry died of a heart ailment Monday, August 16, 1999, at Perry Lutheran Home, in Perry, Iowa.

Funeral service for Mr. Harris, who formerly taught instrumental music at Manning and Westside and owned Harris Music Co. in Carroll, was held Thursday, August 19, 1999, at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Perry.

Honorary casket bearers were members of Otley Masonic Lodge No. 299 and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.

Hastings Funeral Home in Perry was in charge of arrangements.

Burial was in Milton East Cemetery in Milton, Wisconsin.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mr. Harris taught instrumental music in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa: including Manning, Westside, and Adair. He also owned Harris Music Co. in Carroll from 1954 to 1965.

He retired in 1979 and moved to Perry. Mr. Harris then taught at Elderhostel sites.

He was a member of Otley Masonic Lodge, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, Elks Lodge, Iowa State Education Association, and Iowa State Music Association.

Mr. Harris is survived by two sons: Joel Harris of Carroll and Michael Harris, Sr. of Milton; a sister, Ethel Hockerman, of Brookfield, Wisconsin: and a grandchild.

Pastor Ron Bronemann officiated at services at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Perry at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 19 for Orville "Bud" William Harris, 81, of Perry.

He died at the Perry Lutheran Home on Monday, August 16, 1999.

Music was by Luther Bartelt, Tiffany Ellenberger, Kwanchai Altman, Rev. Jim Pemble, Zachary Hackney, Jim Ellenberger, Greg Haglund, Matt Jungck, Steve Cook, Kari Allen, and Dan Royer.

Honorary pallbearers were members of Otley Masonic Lodge No. 299 A.F. & A.M. and Za Ga Zig Shrine.

Burial was in Milton East Cemetery in Milton, Wisconsin. Memorials may be left at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry.

Son of Alford Harris and Othelia (Olson) Harris, "Bud," as he was fondly known, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on October 22, 1917. He graduated from Milton College in 1941 with a bachelor's degree in music education and received his master's degree from Vandercook University in Chicago, Illinois.

On December 25, 1943, he was united in marriage with Maxine Hurley in Milton, Wisconsin.

Bud started teaching instrumental music in South Beloit, Illinois, and later went to Laona and Cashton, Wisconsin. The family lived in Manning from 1945-1953.

They moved to Carroll where they owned and operated Harris Music Company from 1945-1965. Bud taught at Manning during that time and later at Ar-We-Va and Adair-Casey.

He retired in 1979 and shortly thereafter moved to Perry. Bud spent many years playing in dance bands throughout the area. After retirement, he attended or taught at several elderhostels.

He was a member of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge No. 407, Otley Masonic Lodge No. 299 A.F. & A.M., Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, Iowa State Education Association, Iowa State Music Association, and Iowa Retired School Personnel.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Mark.

Survivors include two sons, Joel C. of Carroll and Michael J. Sr. of Milton, Wisconsin; a grandson; and a sister, Ethel Hockermann of Brookfield, Wisconsin.
