VIRGINIA A. HUMMER, formerly of Des Moines
Virginia A. Hummer, 88, passed away Monday at St. Lukes Northland Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church 511 Des Moines St. Des Moines, Iowa. Interment will follow in Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa.

Virginia was born to Oscar and Elsie (Lack) Agrell in Des Moines on September 9, 1918.

She received her education in history and music from the University of Iowa. She married Dr. Charles Phillip Hummer, of Iowa City, in 1943.

In 1959, the family moved to Manning, Iowa, where Charles was the vocal instructor at Manning High School, and also taught Freshman English for two years. They were members of Sacred Heart Church in Manning.

Virginia was a violin teacher with Des Moines Public Schools until her retirement in 1980.

Virginia's father made and repaired violins in the Des Moines area for many years.

He taught Virginia how to play at the age of four; it was a talent she enjoyed for 80 years.

She taught hundreds of children to play the violin. Virginia played in symphonies around the country including the Des Moines Symphony through the 1960s and 1970s.

She leaves a loving legacy of music and artistry to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Virginia is survived by four children; James R. Hummer of Iowa City; Katharine L. Lowe of Trimble, Missouri; Frank A. Hummer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Marcellina J. Anderson of Omaha, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Charles Phillip Hummer and a daughter Theresa M. Ortman.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday at McLaren's Chapel, 801 19th St. West Des Moines, Iowa. Memorials may be given in her name to Oakridge of Plattsburg - 205 E. Clay Avenue, PO Box 247 - Plattsburg, Missouri, 64477.
