Mrs. Sutherland, the former Alice Cummins, is a sister-in-law of Ralph G. and Ernest D. Sutherland of Manning, and a sister of the late Albert Cummins, U.S. Senator from Iowa.
Besides her children, she is survived by two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Alice was born October 29, 1869, daughter of Thomas Layton and Sarah Baird (Flenniken) Cummins.
She had nine siblings: Mary, Albert, James, Margaret, Benjamin, John, Elle Grefe, Anna, Louisa McHenry.

Funeral services will be held in Sioux Falls Thursday for
Mrs. Alice Mae Sutherland, 89, whose brother, the late Albert Cummins, was former
governor of Iowa, U.S. Senator and acting Vice President of the United States.
Her brother was governor of Iowa from 1904 to 1908 and a U.S. Senator from 1908 to 1926. When President Harding was killed, Senator Cummins became acting Vice President under President Coolidge.
Mrs. Sutherland died at a local hospital Tuesday night, October 6, 1959. She made her home with her son, Dwayne Sutherland, 2011 Austin Dr. Rites will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church.
Alice Mae Cummins was born in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania, on October 29, 1869, daughter of Thomas Layton and Sarah (Flenniken) Cummins.
She moved to Des Moines in 1880 with her parents. She was a graduate of Des Moines High School.
She taught school until her marriage to Lial C. Sutherland on June 6, 1899, in Des Moines. After marriage, the couple lived in Des Moines. In 1908, they moved to Buffalo Center, Iowa. From 1912 to 1931 they lived at Fairmont, Minnesota; Sioux Falls, and Storm Lake, Iowa.
Mr. Sutherland died in 1931 and the following year Mrs. Sutherland moved to Sioux Falls to live with a daughter, Louise Sutherland.
She and her daughter moved to Detroit in 1934.
Mrs. Sutherland made her home with two sisters in Des Moines from 1938 to 1954, after which she moved to Chicago to live with Louise.
She moved back to Sioux Falls in August.
Mrs. Sutherland was a member of Presbyterian Church, Storm Lake Chapter of PEO, and the History Club. She was active in dramatic work in both acting and directing fields at various places in which she lived.
She enjoyed writing poems and articles, some of which were published in various magazines.
The Rev. Clarence Adams will officiate at the funeral.
The body will lie in state at Miller Funeral Home until 9 a.m. Thursday, when it will be taken to the church to lie in state until the service hour. Graveside rites will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Manning, Iowa, Cemetery.
Surviving is the son, Donald W. Sutherland, Sioux Falls; the daughter, Louise, Chicago; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
