Bernard Volquartsen
We offer this week the obituary of Barney Volquartsen who lost his life last week Tuesday, March 23, 1920, by being kicked to death by his horses, on account of which appeared in last week's issue.

Bernhard Volquartsen was born in the province of Schleswig, Germany, December 6, 1877. He came to America with his parents in 1882 and came directly to Crawford County, which place has been his home since that time.

In 1900, he was married to Miss Anna Neethan and to this union eleven children were born, three dying in infancy, those surviving being Hilda, Emma, Ella, Henry, Anna, Carl, Paul, and Otto, all of whom are at home with the mother. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. John Hargens of Spencer and two brothers, Henry of Bloomfield, Nebraska, and Ferdinand who resides in Shelby County.

The body was brought on Wednesday to the Jackson Undertaking Parlors where it lay in state until Thursday afternoon when it was borne to the L.D.S. Church, and at 3 o'clock Rev. Frese of Denison conducted the last sad rites after which the silent form was laid to rest in the Dow City Cemetery, Dow City, Iowa. The heartfelt sympathy of the entire community is extended the bereaved widow and fatherless children in their great sorrow.

The funeral of Barney Volquartsen, whose tragic death was mentioned last week, was held Thursday afternoon at the L.D.S. Church, conducted by Rev. William Frese, pastor of the Lutheran Church at Denison, with which denomination the deceased was affiliated. Following a short service the body was laid to rest in the Dow City Cemetery. The passing of Mr. Volquartsen has removed from us ono of our best and most respected citizen, the news of the awful death which he was called upon to pass through time and a great shock to his family and friends. Only a short time ago the departed purchased the Fred Wiley farm located live miles south of town, having moved his family there, from the T.K. Coleman place north of Arion, the first of March. The Volquartsen family, a number of years ago, resided on the M.T. Sharp place near the railroad tracks, at which time the was employed by Chris Vollersen in the elevator.

Mr. Volquartsen was a man possessed with a quiet disposition and his exemplary life and character was for him the highest esteem of everyone with whom he came in contact.

He came to America in 1882, coming to Crawford County, where he spent the rest of his life. He was married to Miss Anna Neethan in the year 1900, who with eight children: four sons and four daughters, are left to mourn him. The children are as follows: Hilda, Emma, Ella, Henry, Anna, Carl, Paul, and Otto. He also leaves two brothers. Henry, of Bloomfield, Nebraska, and Ferdinand, of near Dunlap, and one sister, Mrs. John Hargens, of Spencer, besides other relatives and many friends. We join with friends in extending condolence in this sad hour.
