Charles Ossenkop Is Laid To Rest

Charles Ossenkop, 84, succumbed at his home here early Thursday morning, January 14, 1943. He had been in declining health for about four years and bedfast for the past year.

Funeral rites were held Monday, January 18 at the Zion Lutheran church with Pastor John M. Ansorge in charge of the services.

Mr. Ossenkop was born August 10, 1858, in Listringen near Hildesheim, Hanover, Germany, a son of Gottlieb and Christina (Hofel) Ossenkop.

Coming to Iowa from New York City in 1880, he settled in Clinton County. He subsequently came to a Clinton County farm, moving a school house from there to Crawford County which he converted into a farm home. He moved to Manning in 1911, having lived in the same house ever since that time. With the exception of five years as a merchant in New York, he had been a farmer until his retirement.

Mr. Ossenkop was married at Lyons, Clinton County in 1880 to Miss Lena Horn, who passed away in 1894. He returned to Germany in 1895 where he met a boyhood sweetheart, Miss Christina Burgdorf, who returned to America with him. They were married at Avoca.

Surviving are his wife and children: Walter living on a farm near Manning; Mrs. F. C. Thielking (Frieda), Des Moines; Mrs. William Kuhlman (Teresa), Charter Oak; Louie, who is stationed in Georgia with the U. S. Army and Miss Caroline Ossenkop, Des Moines.

Two daughters and one son preceded him in death: Mrs. A. H. Hinz (Alma) in 1930; Ella at the age of two and one-half years, and Herman, three months.

He also leaves 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Mr. Ossenkop was a member of the Manning Lutheran church. Burial was in the Hayes Township Cemetery in Crawford County. Acting as pallbearers were Alfred Kuhl, William Misselhorn, Louis Schelldorf, Melvin Wolfe, Chris Hargens, Herman Claussen.
