Chas. Rocksien Rites Held Friday
The community was greatly shocked when it was reported that Charles Rocksien was found dead in a snow drift Tuesday morning, February 26. Death is thought to be due to a heart attack. He had been suffering many years from severe heart trouble.
He was missed Monday evening but was not found until Tuesday morning.
Charles Rocksien, the son of Joe Rocksien and Annie his wife, was born April 21, 1872, at Des Plaines, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John Rocksien of Carroll and Henry Rocksien of Missoula, Montana, and a sister Louise Swerengen of Happy, Texas.
In March 1889 he with the family moved to Carroll County, Iowa, living first on a farm near Manning, then moving near Carroll, back to Breda where the mother died, after which he came back to Manning and worked on a farm.
On February 19, 1902, he was united in marriage to Miss. Ida Parker. Two children were born to this union; Pearl C., Mrs. G. T. Plunkett of Philomath, Oregon and Lee C. Rocksien of Witchita, Kan., Also two grandchildren, Dale and Illa Plunkett remain who with the others mourn the death of the husband and father.
There are two brothers, William of Lincoln, Nebr., and Albert Rocksien of Montgomery, Iowa.
After his marriage he worked as a carpenter and built a number of houses in Manning. In 1903-1908 he was a rural mail carrier and rode the route in all kinds of weather. In 1908 he took up farming. In 1913 he built the home at the edge of town where he has resided since.
In youth he was baptized in the Lutheran Church. Later he united with the Evangelical Church at Des Plaines, Ill. Then as a young man he joined the Methodist Church. He was greatly interested in the Epworth League, and the Sunday School in which he was a teacher for many years. The last Sunday of his life he taught the Methodist Bible Class of the Church.
He had reached the age of 62 years, 10 months and 4 days.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the Ohde Funeral Home, Rev. Harry Coates officiating. Burial was in the Manning cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Jul Wehrman, M. F. Enenbach, Wm. Bobar, Jacob Lage, Peter F. Hansen and R. G. Sutherland.
Those from a distance attending the funeral were: Mrs. G. T. Plunkett and daughter Illa of Philomath, Oregon; Mr. and Mrs. Lee C. Rocksien of Witchita, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Parker and daughter Mabel of Mapleton, Iowa; Mrs. Perle Calvert and daughter Evelyn of Sioux City, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Will Rocksien and son Will and daughter Elsie of Lincoln, Neb.; Mr, and Mrs. Albert Rocksien and daughter Eva and son-in-law of Montgomery, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs.: Frank Miller and Mrs. Emma Huber of Manilla.
