Daryl was born on September 10, 1927, in Crawford County, Iowa, to Charles and Elda (Rowedder) Stuhr. He was educated in rural schools through the 8th grade, in Carroll, Calhoun, and Crawford Counties, Iowa. He was an active farm boy during those years.
He graduated from Westside High School, Westside, Iowa, in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army before college. He received a Bachelor's Degree from Iowa State University in 1952, a Master's Degree from Drake University in 1956 and a Master's Degree from the University of South Dakota in 1964.
Daryl married Lillian McGrew in Springfield, Iowa, on June 6, 1953. They have four children: Debra (Denny Bull, Pearl City, Illinois), Mariann (James Kropp, Rio Verde, Arizona), Cristine (Gary Giacomelli, Springfield, Illinois) and James (Chris Tarrence, Wheatridge, Colorado). Grandchildren are Matthew Kropp, Rachael Kropp, Brian (Dawn) Bull, Brandon (Lisa) Bull, Angela (Peter) Wolfgram, Kathleen Giacomelli, Michaelanne Laney and Tyler Stuhr. They also have four great -grandchildren.
Daryl taught science and mathematics in Woodward High School, Iowa for eight years and was also high school principal for four of those years. He taught science in Sac City High School, Sac City, Iowa for eight years and was a biology instructor at Illinois Valley Community College, Oglesby, Illinois, for 24 years, (1968 until retirement in 1992).
Daryl was formerly a member of the Association of Midwest College Biology Teachers, the Peru Lion's Club, the U.S. Cavalry Association, and a member of the First Congregational Church in Peru.
He was a volunteer for the Red Cross Mobil Meals, a volunteer Red Coat at the Illinois Valley Community Hospital (St. Margaret's Hospital) in Peru, and a volunteer at Lily Pads (for PADS homeless shelter).
He is survived by his wife, his four children and their spouses, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert, in 1937 and by his parents, (mother, 1981, and father, 1991), a brother-in-law in 2017 and a brother-in-law in 2022.
