Jurors Rule Man's Death Is Accidental
A coroner's jury at Manning ruled late Monday that the shooting death of Eddie Wegner, about 49, was caused accidentally.
Dr. John Morrison, Carroll County coroner, empaneled Albert Handlos Jr., Orval Fink and Herbert Groteluschen as jurors.
Two Witnesses
The inquest was held at the Ohde Funeral home with two witnesses testifying -
Mrs. Wegner and Dr. Arthur F. Smith. They gave it as their opinion the shooting was accidental, Dr. Morrison said.
Mr. Wegner, a farmer, was found wounded fatally, in the northeast corner of the basement of his home about 8:30 a.m. Monday, Dr. Morrison reported. He said he was informed that Mr. Wegner picked up a 22-caliber rifle from behind the stair door and took it down in the basement where he put on his overshoes. It was believed he was preparing to go out and shoot rats in the farm outbuildings.
Mrs. Wegner heard the gun discharge and found her husband's body. She called Dr. Smith and two neighbors.
The bullet entered the right side of Mr. Wegner's head.
