Ellen then attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake where she received her teaching certificate. Ellen was a rural schoolteacher for two years.

On June 18, 1947, Ellen was united in marriage with Jack D. Rasmussen at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning. Three children were born to this union. The couple made their home in Manilla where Ellen was a housewife and Jack worked as a carpenter. Ellen also worked as the bookkeeper for Rasmussen Lumber Company for several years.

Ellen was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a skilled seamstress. Most important to Ellen were her family and friends.
