Elva Amanda Massman, the daughter of Fred and Clara (Jochimsen) Lohrmann, was born July 23, 1901, near Manning, Iowa. She died Friday, June 25, 1999, at the Eventide Nursing Horn in Denison, Iowa, after reaching the age of ninety-seven years eleven months, and two days.
Elva was a member of the United Church of Westside taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was very community oriented, belonging to many clubs, including the Busy Thimbles, United Church Women's Group, Fortnight Club, Senior Citizens, the 500 Card Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary, of which she was a member for over fifty years. Elva enjoyed cooking and making rugs. Whoever had rags, drapes, trousers or old fabric would bring them to her. Most rugs averaged three or four feet, the largest one is eight by ten feet, which a granddaughter, Kristi Epke, of San Anselmo, California cherishes.
On December 15, 1920, Elva was united in marriage to Otto Massman. They farmed around the Westside area most of their married life, with the exception of three years near Arcadia.
Elva was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto in 1976; a grandson, Mark Massman, a sister, Ada Frahm; and a brother, Frenz Lohrmann. Survivors include one daughter, Maurine Englehardt and her husband, August of Omaha; one son, Verle Massman and his wife, Donnabelle of Westside; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Arla Dammann of Manning; Lora Sander of Yreka, California; one sister-in-law, Erma Lohrmann of Manning; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
