George Peper
George Peper, living two and one-half miles east of Manilla, committed suicide last Saturday afternoon. It seems, as near as we can learn, after dinner he told the boys to hitch up a team to the carriage and he and Mrs. Sophia (Meggohtsen) Peper would go to town. The boys went to the barn and were starting to hitch up when he also went out to the barn or shed in the rear of the main barn, and soon a shot was heard, and immediately going to the shed they found their father in a dying condition with a shot through his forehead. He lived about two hours.

There was no reason that anyone knows of for the shooting. He had no trouble of any kind and the cause of the deed remains unsolved. He is a well-to-do farmer, had a good home, and plenty of money in banks.

Mr. Peper was born in Germany about 56 years ago, came to Davenport in 1873, and two years later to Crawford County, where he has resided on the same farm since. He leaves a wife and four children: one boy and three girls, an aged mother, and two brothers to mourn his loss.

The funeral was held at the home Tuesday, November 18, 1907, Rev. Hansen, a German Lutheran Minister, of Schleswig, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Iowa Township Cemetery, followed by a long concourse of friends.
