Helen Frances, daughter of Dan and Marie (Moser) McGrath, was born October 3, 1917, at Manning, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian faith. Helen attended school in Manning and was graduated from Manning High School in 1935.
Helen worked at Dultmeier Manufacturing as a secretary until her marriage to Raymond O. Pratt on March 18, 1944. Four children were born to this union: Carolyn, Dan, Kelly, and John. Helen and Ray made their home in Manning where they raised their family. Helen also worked as a news correspondent carrying on a job her mother held for many years. She reported for the Monitor and several other area papers, as well as Des Moines, Council Bluffs, and Omaha. Later she worked at the Manning General Hospital as a bookkeeper and receptionist.
Helen was very active in the First Presbyterian Church in Manning. She held many offices in the United Presbyterian Women, served as Elder of the church, and Sunday School teacher and superintendent. She was a member of Salona Chapter 231, Order of the Eastern Star, and of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries.
Helen had been in poor health for nearly two years. She died peacefully at her home in Manning on Sunday morning, March 24, 1985, at the age of 67 years, 5 months, and 21 days.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Ralph McGrath.
She is survived by her husband, Ray, of Manning; by four children: Carolyn, Mrs. Earl Blohm, of Audubon; Dan Pratt and his wife, Angela, of Wichita, Kansas; Kelly Pratt of Bradenton, Florida; and John Pratt and his wife, Christine, of St. Louis, Missouri; by six grandchildren: Susan Blohm Mardesen, Mary Blohm Venteicher, Ellen Blohm, Stephanie Blohm, Nina Pratt, and Sean Pratt; by her father-in-law, Orin E. Pratt.; by one sister, Mary, Mrs. Arved Stangl, of Manning; by one brother, Robert McGrath, and his wife, Janet, of Birmingham, Alabama; by one aunt, Melitta Palmatary, of Wilmington, Delaware; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Helen Pratt is buried in the Manning Cemetery.
