Ida H., daughter of L.L. (Fay) and Lizzy (Joehnk) Schoenjahn, was born June 18, 1913, on the family farm near Westside, Iowa. Ida was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Church in Westside. She was able to take piano lessons as a child and also played trombone in the school band. Ida graduated from Westside High School in 1931. She then attended Iowa State Teacher's College, Cedar Falls, where she earned her first year elementary education certificate. Ida taught in Westside area rural schools for seven years.
After courting for four years, Ida was united in marriage with John Musfeldt on January 19, 1939, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. They were the parents of three children, Jay, Betsy and Phillip. Ida and her husband operated a farm north of Manning. After dairy regulations got too strict they moved into Manning and the farm was sold. After moving to town, Ida baby-sat for a number of families in Manning. Her husband died suddenly and unexpectedly in 1978. Ida regretted that her husband did not have an opportunity to enjoy his growing family.
Ida was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church after being confirmed as an adult. She served on various committees and circles, preparing many church meals over the years. She was a dedicated community volunteer and retained her love of music throughout her life. In her spare time she enjoyed embroidery, fancy work and traveling to see her children and their families.
As her health began to fail, Ida became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home on January 12, 1998. While a resident of the nursing home, Ida remained very active, living life to the fullest. She died there on Thursday, November 27, 2003 at the age of 90 years, 5 months, and 19 days.
Preceding Ida in death are her parents, husband, and a brother and his wife, Henry and Bernice Schoenjahn.
She is survived by her three children: Jay Musfeldt and wife Julie of Salem, Oregon; Betsy and husband Leon Precise of Birmingham, Alabama; and Phil Musfeldt and wife Cheryl of Richardson, Texas; five grandchildren: John Precise and wife Heather; Scott Precise and wife Jennifer, Joel Musfeldt, Melissa and husband Chris Young; and Robert Musfeldt; four great-grandchildren Hannah and Andrew Precise and Justin and Joshua Young; sisters-in-law Arlene Musfeldt of Manning; Elda Gaskill of Audubon; Carol Musfeldt of Omaha and Betty Musfeldt of Sioux City; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
