Mrs. Mitchell died November 30, 1997, at her residence.
Daughter of Wilmer and Vila (Cafourek) Ranniger, she was born January 23, 1947, in Manning and graduated from Manning High School in 1965.
She graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in physical education.
After receiving her special education endorsement, she taught physical education at Kirn Junior High, Edison Junior High, Abraham Lincoln High School, and Washington Elementary School for 11 years. She has been a special needs teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School since 1987.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School and vacation Bible school. She also served on the prayer chain and attended a Bible study group.
Mrs. Mitchell and her husband, Rob, were married 28 years.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Wendy Sue Mitchell, in April.
Survivors in addition to her husband include a daughter, Nicki, and a son, Bob, both of Council Bluffs; her parents, Wilmer and Vila Ranniger, of Manning; two sisters, her twin, Mrs. Joseph (Joan) Scalzo, of Ottumwa, and Joyce Simon of Chicago; a brother, Russ Ranniger, of Manning; nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be tonight from 6 to 8 at McCurdy Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Lewis Township Cemetery, Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Memorials may be offered to Faith Lutheran Church or the
Janet Mitchell Scholarship Fund at Thomas Jefferson High School, Council Bluffs.
