Last Rites Held For Mrs. Johanna Ruhde

Death brought relief from pain and suffering for Mrs. Johanna Ruhde a long time resident of this vicinity on Saturday, Sept. 14. During the time of her illness a spirit' of great patience and real Christian fortitude was manifested as she faced the end of the journey into a better home and peaceful rest. Bravely did she carry on for the sake of those who cherished her and constantly endeavored to lighten the burden of her mother heart. She spent a long and useful life. She is preceded in death by her husband and five, children.

Johanna Elizabeth Ruhde, nee Claussen, was born in Lunden, Holstein, Germany, February 19, 1860. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and: grew to young womanhood in her native country. In the year of 1880 she was married to Wilhelm Ruhde in her home town where they resided for about a year, after which they came to America. They came to Davenport, Iowa where Mr. Ruhde followed his profession as a cigar maker. They lived in Davenport until 1886 when they came to Manning and has resided in this vicinity since.

Mr. and Mrs. Ruhde were the parents of eight children of which three survive Bertha, Mrs. Hy. G. Martens and Emma, Mrs. Henry Karsten of Manning; Johanna, Mrs. L.M. Hinz of Audubon. She also leaves 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Emma Schultz of Davenport, Iowa, and Mrs. Mary Langheim, Sioux City, Iowa and many other relatives and friends.

Her husband passed away in 1930; two sons died in infancy and two sons William and Peter died in 1929. A daughter, Mrs. Byron York died in 1932.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 16 at 2 o'clock the afternoon at the Zion Lutheran Church at Manning, the Rev. J.M. Ansorge, pastor of the church officiating. Interment was made at the Manning Cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were 6 grandsons: Lester Karsten, Harold Ruhde, Melvin Hagge, Joe Sonksen, George Graves and Alfred David.

Mrs. Ruhde passed away Saturday, September 14, 1940, at 10:20 at the Wyatt Memorial Hospital at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 24 days.

Since the death of her husband she made her home with her daughters and families, and of late with Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Martens until about two weeks ago when it was deemed advisable to taker her to the hospital, for better care.

She was a loving mother, a kind and helpful friend, a devout Christian and a member of the congregation of the Zion Lutheran congregation of the Zion Lutheran Church of Manning.


Johann Ruhde is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
