JOHN OPPERMAN

John Opperman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claus Opperman, was born on July 10, 1865, in Schleswig, Germany, and passed away at his home in Manilla, on May 31, 1944.

When he was five years old, he came with his parents, to America. They first settled in Clinton County, Iowa. In 1876, they moved to Carroll County, and John was with them there until February 14, 1890, when he was united in marriage to Anna Marie Rogers (Note: it is listed as Rathjer in Anna's OB). To this union, nine children were born, five whom survive their father.

After farming nine years at Manning, the family moved to a farm near Manilla. In 1902, Mr. Opperman started to work for the Milwaukee Railroad, being honorably retired from that occupation in 1937.

Mrs. Opperman preceded her husband in 1927, and since that time, his son, Gilbert and his family have lived with their father. Mr. Opperman always enjoyed good health until the beginning of this year, when his physical strength began to fail rapidly. His delight was in his job and in the presence of his grand-children. Surviving him are his six children, Mrs. Arthur Farley of Manilla, Mrs. George Nissen of Manning, Mrs. Bertha Kraach of Lake City, Harry of Portland, Oregon, and Gilbert and Ray who are in the army. There are eighteen grand children. He had six great-grandchildren three brothers add one sister.

Burial was in the Manning Cemetery in the family lot.
