Manning High Class of 1941 Has Reunion
The Manning-Manilla Country Club was the setting for the 25-year reunion of the
Manning High School graduating class of 1941 Saturday evening.
George Wegner, Roy Struve, Joyce Schroeder and Betty Grimm greeted guests, who were registered by Alice Beck. Each guest received the class flower, a pink carnation boutonniere or corsage, which had been made by Pauline Graves and Marge Kusel. A 6:30 social hour was followed by a 7:30 dinner in the decorated dining room. The speakers' table was centered with a floral arrangement of pink carnations accented by silver candles in crystal holders. Silver candles and single carnations in bud vases were used alternately on other tables. Nutcups in the class colors of old rose and silver, made by Joyce Schroeder, completed table appointments. A white skirt on the speaker's table displayed the motto: "We are in the harbor, the ocean lies before us."
Immediately following dinner, the group observed a moment of silence honoring two classmates, Daryl Mohr and Gene Strathman, who died in service. Robert Rostermundt responded to the welcome given by Dorothy Kusel. Toastmaster Lyle Hoffmann then introduced each class member, who in turn gave a brief resume of years since graduation. Faculty members Marvin Waltz and Bill Campbell spoke briefly.
Letters were read from classmates Robert Ramsey, Whittier, California; Warren Petersen, Sebastopol, California; Anetha (Graves) Trecker, Holmdel, New Jersey; Norma (Dietz) Felker, Buffalo Center, and Leola (Keat) Petersen of North Platte, Nebraska, as well as from faculty members Bill (C.W.) Steneker, Mason City; Marie Perkins, Des Moines; Elnor (Vannote) Detlefsen, Tucson, Arizona; Leone (Sumner) Zaversnick, Rock Springs, Wyoming; and Amos Lee, Des Moines.
Mary Keat recognized custodians Henry Dethlefs and John Joens and their wives by reading "A Tribute to our Janitor," an editorial which Louise Kuhl had composed for a Spotlite of 1941.
The program was concluded by Lucille Boell, who read her original poem depicting outstanding achievements of classmates as appropriate prizes were awarded. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dethlefs won the door prize, which was the dining table centerpiece.
During a short business meeting the group decided to hold another reunion in 1967, with Marge Kusel as chairman. Dorothy Kusel arranged a display of old MHS Spotlites, newspaper clippings and photos of class members and their families. Each class member received a souvenir booklet compiled by the women of the committee which contained information on lives and activities of the graduates and faculty members of 1941.
The Committee in charge of the event was George Wegner, Roy
Struve, Virginia Wiese, Pauline Graves, Betty Grimm, Lucille Boell, Velma
Kruse, Alice Beck, Dorothy Kusel, Joyce Schroeder, and Marge Kusel.
