L.C. Thomsen Dies Sunday, 100 Years Old
Funeral Set Tuesday At Manning for Carroll County Centenarian
Lorenz C. Thomsen of Manning, retired farmer, who reached his 100th birthday July 16, died last evening, August 8, 1948, at Mrs. Sophie Knute's Nursing Home in Glidden. He had beta bed-fast since suffering a fractured hip in a fall last February.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning. The Bev. Brown Garlock, minister of the Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Maiming Cemetery.

Mr. Thomsen was still active in farming at the age of 84. He was supervisor of the large Henry Kuhl estate which comprised several farms. He assumed the entire responsibility of planting and cultivating several hundred acres of corn. While the hired help used riding cultivators, Mr. Thomsen used the old-type walking plow.

Born July 16, 1848, in Enge, Schleswig, Germany, Mr. Thomsen came to the United States alone in 1876 and settled in Clinton, Iowa. Later, he located in Carroll County, working here for a year before returning to Langenhorn, Germany in 1879. He was married to Margaretha Hansen at Langenhorn February 9 of that year.

The couple then came to this country and settled on a farm near Manilla, although the town had not been founded at that time.

After farming in that area several years, Mr. Thomsen became ill and was forced to rent out his land. When he partially regained his health, he started a dray line at Manilla.

In 1900, the Thomsens moved to Manning and operated a 15-acre dairy farm in addition to farming 160 acres of land.

Mr. Thomsen had many side lines in addition to farming. He dealt in real estate and served as executor of several estates.

He was also an amateur veterinarian. He liked to train horses and continued to do so until he was quite old.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomsen had six children, all of whom are deceased. Five died in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Alma Lohmeier, October 25, 1936.

Mrs. Thomsen died in 1938.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Mrs. Albert Andresen, and a great-grandson, Norman Andresen, both of Manning.

Mr. Thomsen belonged to the Daily Times Herald Three Quarter Century Club.
