He farmed most of his life in Crawford County, was once an Iowa Township trustee, started a boy's 4-H club in in Manilla, and served as a member of the Manilla Community School District Board of Education. He was an elder and a trustee of First United Presbyterian church in Manning.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, at First Presbyterian Church in Manning with the Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Odessa Wycoff will be organist and the church choir will sing. Burial, under the direction of the Ohde Funeral Home of Manning, will be in Nishnabotna Cemetery at Manilla. Active casketbearers will be grandsons: Randall and Rick Spies, Corey and Craig Wegner, Kent Pfannkuch, and John Vennink. Honorary bearers will be James Theobald, Ray Hayes, Raymond Witt, Earl Pfannkuch, Ray Saunders, Jack Olberding, and Fred Harvey.
Mr. Vennink is survived by his wife Selma, Manning; six children: Mrs. Russell (Mildred) Spies, Gray; Allen Vennink and his wife Pat, Manning; Mrs. Ron (Lois) Frahm, Manning; Mrs. Errol (Anna Belle) Wegner, Manning; Marvin Vennink and his wife Sandy, Manilla, and Mrs. Keith (Marilyn) Pfannkuch, Manning; 17 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two brothers: John Edward Vennink, Houston, Mo., and Carroll Vennink, Manilla; a brother-in-law Clay Denton, Manilla; his mother-in-law Minnie Miller, Manilla; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons: Martin Edward as an infant in 1945 and Wayne Wesley who died in 1972, a great-granddaughter and a sister Miriam Denton.
Mr. Vennink was born on January 10, 1908, in Des Moines, a son of John Wesley and Anna Belle (Welton) Vennink. He lived on a farm near Manilla, attended rural school and graduated from Manilla High School in 1928.
On December 31, 1932, he was married to Selma Miller at her parents' home near Manilla. He farmed all his life but was semi-retired for the past six years.
