Lucille Monson

Lucille Monson, daughter of Herman and Anna (Jansen) Joens, was born on December 24, 1914, at Clinton. She moved to the Manning area with her parents and sister, Lillian (Mrs. Lester Andresen) in 1918.

Ralph and Lucille were married on December 11, 1935, and made their home in Manning. They had four children: Duane, Gary, Lance, and Julie.

Lucille died on September 29, 1950, at the age of 35; she was a victim of the polio epidemic of that year. At that time her surviving children Duane (14), Gary (10), Lance (4) and Julie (3 years of age).


MRS. MONSON FIRST POLIO DEATH IN CITY
Funeral services for Mrs. Ralph Monson, 35, were held at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning on Monday afternoon, October 2, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Harlan Kruse of the Presbyterian Church and the Rev. Alfred Chris Itse of Irwin in charge. Burial was in the Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Max Fischer, Herbert Sander, Joe Horbach, Joe Stein, Elroy Schrum, and Gilbert Martens.

The Monson-Barrett male quartet of Irwin sang "Beautiful Isle" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye."

Mrs. Monson, the former Lucille Joens, was born on December 24, 1914, in Clinton, Iowa, and passed away on Friday, September 29, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, a victim of bulbar polio. She reached the age of 35 years, 9 months, and 5 days. Mrs. Monson was taken to the hospital September 22 and placed in an iron lung September 26. Hers was Manning's first death from polio.

She is survived by her husband and four children: Duane, Gary, Lance, and Julie Anne. She also leaves her mother, Mrs. Anna Martens of Manning, a sister, Mrs. Lester Andresen (Lillian), two step-sisters, Mrs. Eddie Meggers and Mrs. Carl Schrum, all of Manning, and two step-brothers, Virtus Martens, Manning, and Clarence Martens, Denver.

Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were: Paul Monson, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Benson, J.C. McMahon and daughter, Mrs. Mabel Monson and Junior, in the grade school building.
