Mrs. Martha Maria (Miller) McCormick was born in Melbourne, Canada, on January 19, 1815. In 1883, she was married to William McCormick, and in 1836 they removed to Fort Edwards, New York, where they lived until 1857, when they came to Iowa and located at Davenport. In 1872, they moved to Crawford County, where they lived until four years ago, when they cast their lot among Manning people.
Mrs. McCormick was the mother of nine children, eight of whom are now living and have grown to manhood and womanhood. They are as follows: Mrs. John Nichols and Mrs. Henry Onstott, Sioux City; Mrs. S. Jennings, Brooklyn, New York; Mrs. T. Colcord, Denison, Iowa; Mrs. C.A. Barnes, Manning; Messrs. Proctor McCormick, Wyandotte County, Kansas; Alonzo McCormick, Kansas City; and S.J. McCormick, Audubon.
The deceased was a woman much beloved by all who knew her. She was a faithful wife and devoted mother. Her many kindly acts made her numerous friends.
At the age of 17 she joined the Free Will Baptist Church and
four years later espoused the Advent doctrine, and has ever since been a strong
believer in the mortality of man and no life until after resurrection. The
funeral services were held from the Presbyterian Church on Friday last. Rev. A.W.
Thompson preached a most appropriate sermon, and he was assisted in the sad
rites by Revs. Truman and Elliot. The remains were interred in the Manning Cemetery.
