WAS 70 YEARS OLD
Mr. Petersen was 70 years old.
He was a son of John and Hannah Petersen and was born September 12, 1867, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. At the age of 17 he came with his sister, Caroline, to America and settled in Clinton County. Three years later he moved to a farm near Walnut.
On March 2, 1892, he was married to Sophia Boss. To this union five children were born: Mrs. George Kuhse (Alma), Mrs. Lee Strathman (Clara), and Harry Petersen, all of Manning, and William Petersen of Portland, Oregon, who arrived in Manning Thursday night. A daughter, Mabel, died at the age of six months.
TWO BROTHERS
He also leaves two brothers, Ingwer Petersen of
Oakland, Iowa; and Paul Petersen of Long Beach, California; and three sisters,
Mrs. Caroline Gehlsen of Davenport, who has made her home with Mr. Petersen
since the death of his wife on April 21, 1932; Mrs. L.K. Nelson (Julia), Foreston, Minnesota;
and Mrs. George Ford (Catherine), Long Beach, California.
In 1903 Mr. Petersen moved to a farm one mile north of Manning, where he farmed until 1920.
He then moved to Manning and since that time has been engaged in the elevator and coal business.
Martin Petersen Is Laid To Rest
Another Manning home is made desolate when once more the angel of death
appeared, in our midst on Thursday noon, October 28, entering the home of
Martin Petersen demanding the father of that estimable family after a brief illness of a few weeks.
Mr. Petersen, although quite well generally, had not been in the best of health since last spring when he was in the hospital with double pneumonia. He recuperated fairly well from the attack and was apparently in the best of health during the summer until the 16th of October when he had another attack and was taken immediately to the hospital where the best of care was administered, but to no await. Death released him from further suffering.
Martin Petersen
His passing is a distinct loss and severe blow to his loved ones, with whom
he doted with fervor and devotion as only a father heart could
love. But not only his immediate family feel the loss. Mr. Petersen was
generally beloved. His innumerable friends respected and honored him and valued
his friendship. And general sorrow and regret is expressed throughout the community.
