Peter Rix, 80, Former Monitor Publisher, Is Dead
Hans Peter Nicholas Rix, 80, was born in Germany November 15, 1870, son of August and Gretchen (Wiese) Rix. On September 18, 1895, he married Wilhelmina Baack.

He was the former owner and publisher of The Manning Monitor. He died at the Manning General Hospital Saturday night, April 14, 1951. Mr. Rix, who had been in fairly good health became ill suddenly Thursday night. He was taken to the hospital Friday noon.

Funeral services will be at p.m. Wednesday at the Ohde Funeral Home. The Rev. Harlan Kruse, pastor of the Presbyterian will officiate. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.

Mr. Rix had been active in community life here.

He had served is mayor a number of years. A democrat, he had been postmaster during Woodrow Wilson's administration.

He had been in the newspaper business here 22 years. He bought the Monitor in 1919. In 1929, he took his sons, Arthur and Theodore, into partnership with him. He retired in 1941. Four years later, the paper was sold to Arnold Sanders, the present owner.

Mr. Rix leaves his widow; four sons, Alfred, Harry, Theodore, and Arthur, all of Manning; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters: Theodore Rix, Springfield, Minnesota; John Rix, Arcadia; Mrs. Helen Sukow, Jackson, and Hermine (Mrs. Otto) Krueger Lamberton, Minnesota.


Art Rix was a living historian who I visited with (bothered) for years about Manning's past. Even though these siblings of Peter Rix didn't live in Manning, they have connections so I want to include them with Peter's obituary.

Carl Ness, 87, of Spencer died Tuesday in a hospital in Spencer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. The Rev. Kermit Roisen will officiate. Burial will be in Barnes Township Cemetery at Linn Grove under the direction of the Warner Funeral Home.
Mr. Ness was born May 16, 1895, in Buena Vista County and received his education in rural schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I.
He married Olga Rix January 20, 1931, at Jackson, Minnesota. They farmed near Linn Grove for many years, moving to Sioux Rapids in 1949. In 1968, they moved to Spencer.
Mr. Ness was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and the VFW.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Charles and one daughter, Elizabeth Ness, both of Des Moines; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Helene immigrated to Arcadia, Iowa, in 1884, at the age of 17, then came to Jackson County in 1887 where she married Ludwig Schultz at Lakefield. They lived there two years then moved to the city of Jackson. They had four children: Adolphe, Frederick, Lillian, and Lawrence. Mr. Schultz died in 1910.
Helene then married Julius Suckow in 1917.

Born in Stackendorf, Germany, to August and Gretchen (Wiese) Rix. Laura came to the United States in 1888 settling in Lakefield, Minnesota. She married Adolph Pietz on March 16, 1889, in Lakefield. They farmed in Emmet County, Iowa, until 1900 when they moved to Cass County, near Pillager and farmed in May Township.
Adolph and Laura had one son, Alfred and one daughter, Ella.

Last rites for John G. Rix, 88, were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 21, at the Presbyterian Church in Arcadia, with the Rev. Carl Sinning officiating.
Mrs. Harlan Flink was organist for the service, and accompanied Mr. Flink as he sang "How Great Thou Art." Pallbearers were Albert Hunter, Philip Redig, Edward Erps, Frank Jentzen, Ray Wiebers, and G.W. Evers. Burial was in the Arcadia Cemetery, under direction of the Huffman Funeral Home of Carroll.
Mr. Rix, longtime resident of the Westside and Arcadia area and a former mayor of Arcadia, died at his home here November 19, 1962. He had been ill for several months.

Funeral services for Mrs. John G. Rix, 91, of Arcadia were held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Arcadia Presbyterian Church.
She died November 20, 1968, at Eventide Home, Denison, after a long illness. Daughter of Hans and Anna (Arff) Sievers, she was born in 1877.
The Rev. Allan M. Peterson of Carroll officiated at the rites. Mrs. Vertus Brus was organist and accompanied congregational singing of "My Faith Looks Up to Thee."
Pallbearers were Charles Ness, William Rix, Dennis Rix, Glenn Freese, David Freese, and Kevin Freese. Burial was in the Arcadia Cemetery, under direction of the Dahn-Woodhouse Funeral Home of Carroll.
In addition to her children, friends and relatives of Mrs. Rix who attended the services included Mrs. Peter Rix and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rix, Manning; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ruhser, Holstein; Marvin Moeller, Mrs. LaForest Hier, Springfield, Minnesota; Mrs. Mary Rohwer and Irma Rohwer, Garwin; Mrs. Alex Cuthaert and Mrs. Richard Herring, Sioux Rapids; and others from Fort Dodge, Manning, Westside, Vail, Lake View, Denison and Carroll.
Mrs. Rix, the former Alvine Pauline Sievers, spent the greater part of her life at Arcadia.

MRS. JOHN G. RIX
Mrs. John G. Rix, 91, of Arcadia died at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 1968, at the Eventide Home for the Aged in Denison, where she had lived since April 1964.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Presbyterian Church here, with burial in the Arcadia Cemetery. The Rev. Allan M. Peterson of Carroll will officiate. Friends may call starting at 1 p.m. Friday at the Dahn-Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. At 9 a.m. Saturday the casket will be brought to the church for viewing until the hour of services, and there will be a family prayer service at the church at 9:30.
Mrs. Rix was a lifelong resident of this area. The former Alvine Pauline Sievers, she was born October 6, 1877, at Arcadia, a daughter of Hans and Anna (Arff) Sievers. On December 6, 1889, she was married at Carroll to John George Rix, who died in 1962. She was a member of the Arcadia Presbyterian Church and the United Presbyterian Women's Organization.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Carl (Olga) Ness, Spencer; Mrs. Harvey (Martha) Freese, Arcadia; and Mrs. Harry (Adele) Stoffers, West Islip, New York; a son, William J. Rix, Garwin; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Mrs. Otto Krueger, 99, dies Saturday at Springfield
Mrs. Hermine Krueger, 99, former Lamberton, Minnesota, resident, died April 17, 1982, at Springfield.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday from Sturm Funeral Chapel in Springfield with Rev. John Mueller officiating. Interment was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Springfield.
She was born April 13, 1883, in Germany to August and Gretchen (Weise) Rix. She came to the U.S. in 1891 to Crawford County, Iowa. She married Claus Moeller February 18, 1903, at Manning, Iowa, and they moved to Springfield in 1911. After his death she married Otto Krueger November 29, 1916, at New Ulm. They moved to Lamberton in 1930 where they farmed south of Lamberton and then retired into Lamberton in later years. Otto died in 1966 and Minnie moved to Springfield in 1971 and became a resident of St. John's Lutheran Home in 1973.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Laforest (Laura) Hier of Springfield; son, Harold Krueger of Mankato, fourteen grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, two sons, Marvin and Carl, a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd (Alice) Giersdorf, three sisters and six brothers.

Theodore Rix Dies at Age of 84
Theodore Frederick Rix died at 3 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 1953, at the Pfoltner Nursing Home here, where he had lived for the last four months. Son of August and Gretchen (Wiese) Rix, he was born February 26, 1869. He was 84 years old February 28.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ohde Funeral Home. Pastor John M. Ansorge, of Zion Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.
Mr. Rix's wife, Louise (Kracht) Rix, died January 29, 1951.
He is survived by one son, Lloyd Rix, Manning; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Prior to 1914, Mr. Rix farmed for a while, worked in the Manning Creamery and was also employed by the Rober-Wehrmann Company here. In 1914, he moved to Springfield, Minnesota, where he was a road maintenance worker. Two years ago, he returned to Manning.
Until entering the nursing home, he lived in his own home here part of the time and with his son the rest of the time.

Theodore Rix
Funeral services for Theodore Rix, 84, will be Thursday afternoon at Ohde Funeral Home with Pastor John M. Ansorge of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery.
Rix died Tuesday at the Pfoltner Nursing Home, where he had been a patient for four months.
Born in Germany, he lived in Manning until 1914, when he moved to Springfield, Minnesota. While in Manning he farmed and was employed by the Manning Creamery and Rober-Wehrmann and Company. In Minnesota he was employed by the Highway Commission. He returned to Manning two years ago.
He is survived by one son, Lloyd Rix, Manning: four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Heinrich "Henry"Rix
Henry Rix, living six miles north of town (Manning), died at his home last Saturday, February 6, 1909, after a two weeks illness with stomach trouble and pneumonia.
Henry was born December 31, 1876, at Stackendorf, Holstein, Germany, and came to this country with his parents, August and Gretchen (Wiese) Rix, in March 1892. He was married to Miss Anna Mary Neumann, February 17, 1903, two children being born to them, Edward and Elnor.
He died Saturday, February 6, 1909, at 12 o'clock and was buried Tuesday in the Hayes Township Cemetery. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his wife and two children, his aged parents at Arcadia; four brothers, Theodore, Peter, John, and Julius; three sisters, Helene (Mrs. Louie) Schultz, Jackson, Minnesota; Laura (Mrs. Adolph) Pietz, Bridgeman, Minnesota; and Hermine (Mrs. Claus) Moeller, who lives north of town.
