Graveside funeral rites for Walter Potthast (August 29, 1874 - January 23, 1957), former resident here were held at Manning
cemetery at 3'o clock Wednesday, with the Rev. Carl Sinning of First Presbyterian Church
officiating. Services were held at the Community church in Milford, Wednesday morning.
Mr. Potthast moved from Manning to the lake area a number of years ago. His wife died in 1920.
Walter Henry Potthast was born August 29, 1874, in Freeport, Illinois. He died January 23, 1957, in Milford, Iowa,
and is buried in Manning Cemetery.
His first wife: Thusnelda Therese
Henriette "Tressa" Rutz was born August 20, 1877, in Germany, and died January
28, 1920, in Manning.

His second wife: May E. Thompson was born March 15, 1877, in Carroll County, and died April 23, 1949, in Milford, Iowa.

Mr. Potthast had formerly lived at Manning for a long time.
He is survived by three children: Mrs. Minnie Petersen, Hancock; Irene Potthast, Omaha; and LaVere Potthast, Seattle, Washington, all of whom were at the rites.
A son of Henry and Sophia Potthast, Mr. Potthast was born August 29, 1873. He received his schooling at Davis, Illinois.
He had served as a deputy game warden, having also worked as a railroad man, merchant, and painter.
Mr. Potthast was married to Nellie Rutz at Manning in 1894. After her death, he was married to Mrs. May Thompson Wieland of Carroll, who died in 1949.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Knights of Pythias Lodge.
Besides his daughters and son named, Mr. Potthast leaves three grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
