Robert Sinow

ONE HANDICAP OF "BACK TO THE SOIL"
Robert Sinow has bought a 120-acre farm three miles from Manning, paying therefore $16,400 or something better than $136 per acre. Of course, to work that farm, a man needs stock and machinery, etc. So that a capital of perhaps $25,000 is required, just to get busy on a 120-acre farm in Iowa. There are many that will come much higher, and 120 acres is considered rather a small farm in Iowa. Now, it does not look just the proper thing to preach to people who cannot make both ends meet in the city, to go out onto the soil and get busy there. When 160 acres were to be he had practically for nothing, even then the man who had nothing at all, or very little, could not go out upon the soil unless he hired out to a farmer. It is a glorious theory, this "back to the soil" movement, but it is going to be difficult to put into practice, unless it is supposed to apply to the people who are making more money than they need in the town.
