William Scott Mayberry, 72, colorful Manning figure known to thousands in this area for his appearances as chief chef at pancake festivals, was killed instantly about 9:30 o'clock last night in an auto-truck collision on Highway 71 two miles south of Auburn.

Manager of the Doud Milling Company at Manning, he was known familiarly as "Scotty" and the "Pancake King." He was a bachelor. A sister, Mrs. Lucy Barsby of Manning, survives.

Sheriff Al Thorup said Mayberry's car struck the rear of a parked semi-trailer truck. The automobile was demolished and Mr. Mayberry died instantly of multiple injuries.

The Carroll County sheriff quoted the truck driver, A.L. Ballinger, 44, of Sidney, Iowa, as saying the collision occurred just as he was engaged in placing lighted flares around the truck. Mr. Ballinger said motor trouble developed just as he got outside of Auburn and that he stopped the truck to see what was the matter. While placing the flares he heard the crash. The truck, owned by Union Freightways of Omaha, was loaded with furniture. It was damaged slightly.

The body of Mr. Mayberry was brought to Carroll by the Huffman Funeral Home ambulance. Sac County officials held a brief inquiry at the funeral home and announced an inquest would be held today at Sac City. The accident occurred within Sac County.

Later the body was transferred to the Ohde Funeral home at Manning. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ohde Funeral Home with the Rev. Harlan Kruse, pastor of the Manning Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.

Sheriff Thorup and Deputy George Wiskus were called to investigate the accident.

Manning sources said Mr. Mayberry had been in Fort Dodge and was returning home when the accident occurred. He was alone in the car.

Mr. Mayberry spent most of his life in the milling business and was widely-known in Western Iowa for his pancake feeds. He put them on at numerous public celebrations staged by Chambers of Commerce, churches, Legion posts, and other groups.
