Mrs. Sophia Witt, born May 12, 1834, at Leavids, Germany, died at Gray, Iowa, on Wednesday, February 11, 1914, aged 79 years, 8 months and 29 days. Her maiden name was Sophia Holtz and she was married April 30, 1865, to Chris Witt at Leavids, Germany. Here they lived for some time, coming to the United States July 21, 1872. At this time they had five children. They settled at Maquoketa, Iowa. Here their happy home was blessed with two more children. In 1879 they moved onto a farm in Jackson County where they lived five years going to Clinton County. After residing here 6 years they moved to Audubon County where they have since resided. This was in 1888.

The deceased was the mother of eight children, one of whom died when she was sixteen years of age.

Those left to mourn her death are her husband, Chris Witt, the sons, August, of Gray, Iowa; Herman of Doon, Iowa; William, of Gray, Iowa; Bennie of Doon, Iowa. The daughters are Mrs. Mary Ross, of Gray, Iowa; Anna, of Gray, Iowa; and Minnie, of Gray, Iowa. She also leaves 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

At an early age she was consecrated to the Lutheran faith and remained faithful to her trust until her death.

The funeral was held from the home Saturday, many relatives and friends being present to pay their last sad respects to the deceased. Rev. E.P. Scoggan, pastor of the M.E. Church at Manning preached the funeral after which kind hands carried the body to the Gray Cemetery where it was laid at rest.

Mrs. Chris Witt lived to a ripe old age. She raised a large and excellent family of sons and daughters. She was known as a true and loving wife, a devoted mother, and a true friend. She will be missed, it is true, but the memory of her many kindnesses will never be forgotten. The many friends sympathize keenly with the bereaved in their hour of sorrow.
