Bernice Katherine, daughter of James and Mary, (Anthony) Mundt, was born July 18, 1914, on the family farm south of Westside, Iowa. She attended rural school near her home. Bernice moved with her parents to Manning in 1931 and then graduated with the Manning High School Class of 1934. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for a short time after which she returned home to help and care for her parents.

On November 23, 1958, Bernice was united in marriage with William Spiese at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. She and her husband made their home in Manning with her mother and, in the summers, on their farm south of Manning. They farmed together until Bill's health no longer permitted him to actively farm. Bernice and Bill then managed their farms while living in town.

Bill died unexpectedly at home on July 26, 1992. Bernice continued to live in their home and enjoyed driving to her farms and looking after them. For many years she thoroughly enjoyed bowling. Bernice took pleasure from tending her flowers, eating out and visiting with her friends in person and by telephone. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Zion Ladies Aid and VFW Auxiliary.

When her health began to fail she moved to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home for a very short time before her death there on Monday, February 18, 2002, at the age of 87 years and 7 months.

Preceding Bernice in death are her husband, parents and infant brother.

She is survived by family members Ruby Wuebker of Perry; LaRue and husband Fred Orren Hansen of Denison; and Annabelle and husband Keith Lueders of Westside; sisters-in-law: Maxine Feddersen of Lawton; Katherine Kistenmacher of Holstein; Mildred and husband Ray Ernst of Ida Grove; Bonita and husband Donald Diamond of Pleasant Hill; Alice and husband Earl Miller of Santa Monica, CA; Rebecca and husband Roger Schmidt of Holstein; and Linda and husband Bob Mattson of Gardnerville, NV; other cousins, relatives and friends.
