The Central Meat Market at 311 Main Street has a long history. The Signal Bros. started it in 1896. In 1899 Robert Signal sold his interest to Julius Ruge and the store was known as Ruge and Signal. The next owner was Jack Johannsen, followed by Charley Schumann, who then sold it to Wm. Timmerman. Wm. Timmerman retired from active business in 1917 and his son Henry bought the business. He conducted it very successfully for about seven years and in 1927 sold one half interest to his brother Fred. The two brothers operated the store together until January 1, 1930, when Fred bought Henry's share and became the sole owner. Fred managed the store in this location for many years. The building is now occupied by The Golden Rule.
