The Pioneer Market at 405 Main Street was a model pure food store with an
enviable record for cleanliness. It originated under the management of Wm. Roehse,
step-father of George Wenzel. George began as a clerk in the store and eventually
became the owner. This store, too, changed ownership many times, from Wenzel to Ben
Wiese and then in 1931, to Franzenburgs, next to Henry Timmerman, who sold it to
Herman Hagedorn. In 1941 it was sold to Everett Dau and Joe Shields. They managed the
store until May, 1949, when they sold it to Darrell Bales. Darrell had a thriving business,
sharing part of the building with his wife Evelyn, who had a beauty shop in the south part.
The Bales sold their store May, 1955, and moved to Manilla. Eustace Lake became the
next owner, managing the store for a number of years until he retired from the business.
The building is now occupied by Ral-Mars.
