Robert "Bob" Popp, age 89, a proud U.S. Veteran, passed away on the morning of Monday, February 24th, 2020, at the Grandview Heights in Marshalltown.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 28th, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Alex Post officiating. He will be laid to rest with full military honors by the combined American Legion and VFW honor guard of the Marshalltown area in the Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com.

Born on May 14th, 1930, in Arcadia, Iowa, he was one of two boys born to Henry and Ann (Frahm) Popp. The family moved to Manning, Iowa, where he graduated from the Manning High School in 1947. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy in the Korean War aboard the USS De Haven.

While working at the Security Bank in Manning, his eye caught a young lady making a deposit for the local church. A young Delores Winterhof had just moved to Manning to work at the church after the encouragement of a pastor she had worked for in Paullina, Iowa. It was faithful destiny and the rest is history. The couple was united in marriage on March 3rd, 1957, in Galva, Iowa. In March of 1958, they moved to their home at Marietta (west of Marshalltown). Bob worked at Marshalltown Manufacturing as personnel manager for over 20 years and then the Iowa Veterans Home for over 15 years in the security department.

Mr. Popp was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, AMVETS, American Legion, and VFW and served as national commander of the Legion of Guardsmen (LOG). He was also recipient of the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award.

Left to cherish his memory are Delores, his loving wife of 62 years, son Keith (Cathy) Popp of Le Mars, Iowa, granddaughters Lisa Harpenau of Ankeny and her children: Henri, Seth, and Olivia; Tamie Britt of Le Mars and her children: Nicholle, Aaron, and Anna; his brother Richard (Marilyn) Popp of Bradenton, Florida, numerous nieces and nephews, daughter-in-law Cindy Davies of Marshalltown and grandsons Nick and Corbin of Austin, Texas, special friends Bruce and Jackie, and numerous brothers of the Navy and honor guard.

In death, Bob rejoined his son, Gregory, who passed away in 1984 and his parents.

Here is some extended Popp family history and how I'm related to them through the Sachleben family.
In 2018 I found a Popp relative here in Manning who had all 11 children of Detlef & Frederika (Jentzen) Popp.
Detlef's mother was Anna (Sachleben) Popp and Anna was a sister to my great-great-grandmother Sophia (Sachleben) Grau.

Everyone who is a descendent of John & Anna is also my relation and I'm looking for anyone who has old Popp & Manning pictures and information to scan into my Manning Historical Preservation Database.

To give a Popp descendant who is browsing this information an example of how they would be related to me...

Here is a generational breakdown to simplify how the Grau & Popp families are connected
Claus Friedrick and Magdelena (Pieper) Sachleben - parents of Anna & Sophia
Sisters: Anna Sachleben Popp (John) - Sophia Sachleben Grau (Detlef)
1st Cousins: Detlef Popp (Frederika Jentzen) - August Grau (Maria Hansen)
2nd Cousins: William Popp (Bertha Schluter) - Ida (Grau) Kusel (August)
3rd Cousins: Helen Popp (Leslie Sieve) - Amos Kusel (Dorothy Ehrichs)
4th Cousins: Dale Sieve - David Kusel

In case you are not familiar with my historical preservation work or new to my web pages, here are just two old generation pictures I have.
Here is one of the Detlef Popp pictures from a collection sent to me from a Popp descendent in Montana...it was actually this collection that gave me the clues to discover the Sachleben connections between the Popp and Grau families.

Not sure if this Anna Popp of Arcadia is the one who married Amos Epsen.

I would have more pictures of younger generation descendents of the Popp family but I'm staying mostly with the first and second generations for now.
