Lucille Brus
Lucille, daughter of John and Louella (Wheeler) Campbell, was born September 8, 1911, near Botna in Shelby County. Lucille completed grade school in Jefferson No. 1, a one-room school near her home, and graduated with the MHS (Manning High School) class of 1929. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls for two years and subsequently taught for 5 years at Jefferson No. 1 in Shelby County, "White Bear School" Ewoldt No. 7 in Carroll County, and at Gray Consolidated.

On June 4, 1936, Lucille married LeRoy Brus in Harlan. Three children were born to this union: Dorothea MHS 1956, Ronald Brus MHS 1958, and Marilyn MHS 1961. A grandson Craig (Lee) Sullivan graduated from MHS in 1976. Kevin Brus, another grandson of Lucille, married Janet Schroeder MHS 1985 and they have two children: Collin and Emily who attended Manning Schools and will be IKM-Manning graduates in the near future. Lucille's sister, Bernice (Campbell) Hauschildt also attended Jefferson No. 1, and graduated from Manning in 1934. The Brus family farmed for three years in Jefferson Township and then north of Gray until 1959 when they bought her father's farm south of Botna. Lucille assisted with the dairying and the poultry flocks, and loved her garden and flowers. She enjoyed working with the women of the Carroll County Extension Service. As soon as her children were old enough for 4-H, Lucille became a club leader and eventually Carroll County 4-H Chairman. Lucille and LeRoy retired from farming in 1985 and in 1991 moved to Harlan.

While living near Manning, Lucille attended the First Presbyterian Church in Manning with her family. Lucille enjoyed volunteering, socializing, reading and visiting nursing home residents. She was a kind and appreciative woman who enjoyed baking exceptional rye bread and strawberry pie. On July 9, 2002, Lucille passed away in Harlan, Iowa.
