Dean William Fara was born May 7, 1956, in Ames, Iowa. His parents are Orland and Ona (Voss) Fara. In 1966 the Faras, including brothers Alan and Mike, moved to Manning. Dean attended Manning schools and graduated in 1974.
Following graduation he worked in the family business, the Manning Ag Center.
Kimberly Joy Doyle, born September 9, 1957, is the daughter of Dr. K. A. (deceased) and Joy (Moore) Doyle of Westside. Kim's father was the veterinarian in Westside, and her mother sold the World Book Encyclopedia for many years. Kim grew up in Westside with her sisters and brothers: Kathleen (Almelien), Dan, Steve, and Julie. She is a 1975 graduate of Ar-We-Va Community Schools. Following graduation, she attended the University of Iowa, majoring in General Science.
Dean and Kim were married on June 10, 1978, at the United Church in Westside. While Kim finished her degree in Iowa City, Dean worked for Eldon C. Stutsman, an ag supply business, in Hills, Iowa. When they moved back to the area in 1980, they lived on a farm east of Irwin. Dean and his family moved to their home in Manning in 1992 where he continued working with his family at the Manning Ag Center until his sudden death from cancer in February of 2002.
The Faras are the parents of two daughters. Elizabeth Anne Fara was born April 3, 1982. She graduated from MHS in 2000. Elizabeth is currently attending Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine working toward a DVM degree. Megan Kathleen Fara was born April 11, 1985. Megan graduated from MHS in 2003. She is currently employed by American Home Shield in Carroll. Megan's son, William Dean Fara, was born August 6, 2005.
While in high school, both girls were active in the vocal and instrumental music programs.
The Faras are members of the First Presbyterian Church, Manning. Both Dean and Kim have sung in the choir, served on the session, served as Moderator of the Presbytery of Prospect Hill, and served on many other presbytery committees. Kim continues to be an active choir member and session member. Dean was commissioner to the 206th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA.) in 1994, and active in the Synod of Lakes and Prairies. Elizabeth served as Youth Advocate Delegate to the 212th General Assembly of the PC (USA) in 2000.
Dean was active in the Manning community as well. He served as chair and member of the Manning Telecommunications Board, president and member of Manning Rotary, and member of the Manning Heritage Foundation. Dean sang tenor in Der Manning Leiderkranz and Manning's Blues Brothers. He played tenor sax in the Alumni Pep Band.
Kim has been an instructor at the Carroll Campus of Des Moines Area Community College since 1991. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Manning Ag Center until she got a teaching job at St. Joseph's School in Earling, Iowa. Kim earned a B.S. degree in Science Education from the University if Iowa in 1980 and a M.A. in Effective Teaching from Drake University in 1996. She has been a member of the Manning Community School Board of Directors since 1993 and has served as president several times.
