Leta (McMahon) Foley was a teacher in a rural school in Eden Township in the 1930s. She told us a very funny story about those days. One year Mom's students were very excited about the special gift they had planned for her.
She heard them whispering about it often. Mom was sure surprised when the students presented her with a gunny sack full of live pigeons for Christmas!
That was a gift she always remembered.

(Mary Leta McMahon) Everyone knew her as Leta.
Mom graduated from Manilla High School on May 21, 1931. She was just 16 years old. She then attended Normal Training for teachers in Manilla. I don't know if that was a one or two year program.
That would place her as a teacher in 1932 and or 1933.
Leta McMahon's siblings were...
Cletus McMahon
Vernet McMahon
Edward McMahon
Clarence McMahon-died in infancy
Delphine McMahon
Their parents were Agnes Loretta (Powers) McMahon & Edward Martin McMahon. My grandparents farmed near Manilla, Iowa.
