Brothers, Spc. Matthew Gore, and Spc. Michael Gore, each enlisted in the Army National Guard, Carroll unit during their senior year at Manning High School. They took basic training the summer following high school graduation, Matthew at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1999 and Michael at Fort Gordon, Georgia in 2000. Matthew was working in Manning at ECI and Michael had completed his 2nd year at Iowa State when they were called into active duty for Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan February 25, 2004. They served with the 168th Infantry Battalion that coordinated security for the construction of schools and hospitals as a part of Coalition Force efforts to rebuild Afghanistan. The unit returned home June 6, 2005. Matthew and Michael are nephews of Lester Grau who served with the 168th Infantry Battalion in Corning, Iowa.
