At one time there were quite a few Ruhde family members living in Manning and now the name has all but disappeared from Manning's history...like so many other prominent names from the past.

Vergene, daughter of William H., Jr. and Hulda M. (Ohrt) Ruhde, was born on March 6, 1927, the youngest of five children. Her father died when Vergene was only two years old. She grew up in Manning, Iowa, and attended Manning High School. She married Louis "Speed" Hausman on April 14, 1945. Speed joined the U.S. Navy and Vergene joined him in San Diego, California, before he shipped out by bravely riding a train all the way.

Vergene and Speed raised six children in Arcadia, Iowa, during their 47-year marriage together where Speed was in the trucking business. They enjoyed being with friends and playing bingo almost every weekend. In 1975, they moved to Halbur, Iowa. In later years Vergene enjoyed working at several businesses in Halbur, retiring when she was 85.

She was a member of St. Augustine Parish in Halbur. She was also a member of the St. Augustine Ladies Guild.

Left to celebrate her life are her children, Barb (George) Halvorsen, Twin Creek, Arizona; Sue (Larry) Onken, Carroll, Iowa; Kate (Glenn) Williams, Geneseo, Illinois; Steve (Lisa) Hausman, Carroll; John (Julie) Hausman, Halbur, Iowa; Brian (Jean) Hausman, Arcadia, Iowa; as well as 18 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Vergene was preceded in death by her husband, Speed; sons-in-law George Halvorsen and Larry Onken; great-great-grandson Bryan Halvorsen; her parents; and her siblings Arlene Spack Jensen, Marjorie Loftus, Harold Rhude, and Dorothy Mae Wiese.

These next 2 pictures were scanned and sent to me in 2005 by Joan Lagerlof. Sometime after 2007 I tried her e-mail address again, to see if I could get her to send me these and any other Manning/Ruhde/Claussen pictures she had so I could make higher resolution scans but without a working e-mail address for Joan I have no way to reach her.
Hopefully she is still alive and might read this message so I can get in contact with her again.

William & Johanna would be Vergene's great-grandparents
