Vergene, daughter of William H., Jr. and Hulda M. (Ohrt) Ruhde, was born on March 6, 1927, the youngest of five children. Her father died when Vergene was only two years old. She grew up in Manning, Iowa, and attended Manning High School. She married Louis "Speed" Hausman on April 14, 1945. Speed joined the U.S. Navy and Vergene joined him in San Diego, California, before he shipped out by bravely riding a train all the way.
Vergene and Speed raised six children in Arcadia, Iowa, during their 47-year marriage together where Speed was in the trucking business. They enjoyed being with friends and playing bingo almost every weekend. In 1975, they moved to Halbur, Iowa. In later years Vergene enjoyed working at several businesses in Halbur, retiring when she was 85.
She was a member of St. Augustine Parish in Halbur. She was also a member of the St. Augustine Ladies Guild.
