He grew up on a farm 3/4 of mile northwest of town, attending country school at Ewoldt No. 3, and then Manning High School, graduating in 1949. During high school he played football and was a member of the FFA. He then worked on the home farm for a year. In January of 1951, Bill enrolled at Iowa State University.

In 1954, Bill was inducted into the U.S. Army and served at Fairchild AFB at Spokane, Washington until being honorably discharged in 1956. They then returned to Iowa where they raised their five children, farming north of Manning for the next 34 years. The couple moved into Manning in 1992, after which he worked parttime for Rasmussen Lumber and Aspinwall Coop. Phyllis passed away on March 2, 2022.
