Dalton Wendell, son of Arthur and Vivian (Leek) McNutt, was born January 23, 1917, at Lucketts Grove in Audubon County, Iowa. He grew up in Audubon and graduated from Audubon High School in 1935. Dalton then worked as a service station attendant.

On January 31, 1941, Dalton was united in marriage with Nellie Farrell at Maryville, Missouri. Five children were born to this union.

Dalton was a member of the Army Reserve and in 1941 his reserve unit was activated for service in World War II. He served in various capacities, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. From October 1942 to January 1943, he attended Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and upon graduation, was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant. Dalton then served in the North African Theatre of Operations. On September 13, 1943, he was wounded in the eye, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1946.

Upon his return from the war, Dalton and Nellie moved into the present home on Nameless Street. Dalton worked with the United States Postal Service, first as a clerk and then as a city carrier for eight years and finally as a rural carrier for 20 years. In 1979, Dalton retired with 35 years of service.

Dalton was a member of the Manning United Methodist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the 34th Infantry Division Association and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed all sports-especially football, track and field, boxing, horseracing and the Olympics. He was an avid attender of Manning Bulldog and IKM-Manning Wolf sporting events.

Being in the outdoors brought joy to Dalton, mostly fishing and hunting. He enjoyed dining out with family and friends. He also liked watching television - particularly sports, classic westerns, military history on the History Channel and Animal Planet.

In September of 2009, Dalton suffered a stroke and became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. On Thursday, January 7, 2010, he died at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning. He was 92 years of age.

Dalton is survived by four children: Gary McNutt and wife Sharon of Silver City; Mark McNutt and wife Pam of Denison; JoAnn McNutt of Manning; and Mary Saylor of Des Moines; six grandchildren: John McNutt and wife Kate of Silver City; Sarah Rand and husband Robert of Shabbona, Illinois; Stephen McNutt of Rockford, Illinois; Valerie McNutt of Waukee; Laura Ruffcorn and husband Chad of Blencoe; Rachel Saylor of Des Moines; eight great-grandchildren: Olyvia Rand, Kendryck Rand, Isaiah Rand, Caleb Rand, Corrinne Rand, Joshua McNutt, Andrew McNutt and Kaitlyn Ruffcorn; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
