Ernest's daughter, Karen Greim, lives in Colorado.
Ernest moved to Rome, New York and died there some years ago.
Ernest and Clarence Barten were the sons of Chris and Emma Barten.

Ernest Barten in New Jersey
Ernest Barten's address is U. S. Coast Guard, station 97, C. N. 3, Ft. Hancock, New Jersey.
He writes that he is well and happy. They are busy enlarging the camp which is a receiving center for troops.
He states that at times there are from 10,000 to 20,000 soldiers in the camp.

Manning Youth on Coast Guard Duty in invasion - Attacks U.S. Coast Guard Center, Washington.
Coast Guardsman Ernest W. Barton, carpenter's mate 1/c, is making enviable record aboard a coast guard manned LST engaged in amphibious land operations in the south Pacific.
He acts as ship-fitter and is part of the damage control party during landing operations or attack.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Barton of Manning, and is married to the former Mildred Borst, who makes her home at Wes New Brighton, Staten Island, N. Y.


GETS DISCHARGE
Ernest Barten, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Barten, sent a telegram to his parents Sunday that he had arrived in California from foreign service and will receive a discharge from service.
He has served with the coast guard for almost four years and plans to join his wife at Staten Island, N. Y., where the couple make their home.


Funeral services for Ernest W. Barten were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 1984 at the Manning City Cemetery with Rev. Paul Krumm of Zion Lutheran Church officiating.
Ernest, son of Chris and Emma Ross Barten was born Oct. 15, 1911 in Crawford County, Iowa.

He attended Manning High School and graduated in 1930.
During high school and for a short time after graduating, he worked for the Manning Creamery Company.

He attended college at Ames, Iowa.
Ernest moved to New York City where he worked for a creamery and later moved to Rome, New York.

He served in the U.S. Armed Forces during WWII. He died on Monday, Oct. 1, 1984 at a Rome, New York hospital following surgery at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 16 days. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Rome, New York; by his daughter, Karen (Mrs. Lonnie) Grein of Colorado; by his brother, Clarence Barten of Manning; and by his sister, Mrs. Eleanor Kinney of Arizona.

Ernest W. Barten, 72, formerly of Manning, died September 30, 1984, at a Rome, New York, hospital after undergoing surgery.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, October 8, at the Manning Cemetery with Pastor Paul Krumm, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, officiating.

Mr. Barten is survived by his wife Mildred, Rome, New York; a daughter Mrs. Lonnie (Karen) Grein of Colorado; a brother Clarence Barten, Manning, and a sister Mrs. Eleanor Kinney of Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Barten was born October 15, 1911, in Crawford County, Iowa, a son of Chris and Emma (Ross) Barten. He graduated from Manning High School in 1930, worked for a brief time for the Manning Creamery Company and attended Iowa State College in Ames.

Later, he moved to New York City where he was employed by a creamery and still later to Rome, New York, where he was an ice cream maker.

He served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II.


Ernest Barten is buried in the Manning Cemetery.
