Tobias Selmer Hodne, son of Tobias and Julia (Andersen) Hodne, was born March 2, 1919, near Coon Rapids in Guthrie County, Iowa. He attended rural schools near his home and graduated from Viola Township Consolidated School. In 1944, he earned a Bachelor of Science from Iowa State College in Agricultural Economics. While attending Iowa State, he was a member of Delta Chi Fraternity and the ISC varsity track team.

Selmer served in the United States Navy during WWII aboard a destroyer tender in the Pacific. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to the Coon Rapids area where he farmed with his brothers. He was a G.I. Farm Instructor in the Corning and Manning areas.

On February 19, 1950, Selmer was united in marriage with Phyllis Stribe at the Presbyterian Church in Manning. After their marriage he continued teaching for a year and in 1951 they began farming near Irwin.

Selmer's life-long love of the land was shown through his soil and water conservation education activities. Through his example, his family continues reverence for the land. He was active in the Farm Bureau at both the local and state levels and was on the Shelby County Board of Education. He farmed as long as his health permitted. Selmer entered the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in November of 1993. He suffered a major stroke in August of 1994. He then lived at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn and later at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison. He died there on Sunday, October 27, 1996, at the age of 77 years, 7 months, and 25 days.

Selmer was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers: Edgar Hodne and Herman Hodne; and 2 sisters: Ethel Clark and Evelyn Smith.

Selmer is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hodne, of Manilla; three children: Steven Hodne of Manilla; Carol Hodne of Iowa City; and Douglas Hodne and his wife, Susan, of Torrance, California; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
