Joe was 32 years old when he was drafted into the Navy in 1944. He trained at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and from there went to Virginia Beach, Virginia. At Boston, Massachusetts, he served on an LST (landing ship tank) and went on shakedown cruises beyond the three-mile line. Joe's duties took him below deck. After three shakedown cruises he became ill and was taken to Chelsea, Massachusetts, Veteran's Hospital. After several weeks of recovery, Fireman 2nd Class Horbach was given a medical discharge in 1945.

Joe Horbach, 50, manager of Gamble's store, has been a resident of Manning 27 years. coming from neighboring Templeton where he was born and educated. Saying he had several odd jobs after he was married, Joe went to work for his brother, Jack, when the latter bought the Gamble store 24 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Horbach are members of the Catholic church They have two sons, Don attending a body and fender repair school in Omaha and Robert, in his third year at Parsons college, Fairfield. Joe spent one year in the navy during World War II and received a medical discharge. He attended several radio and TV repair schools and for a time cared for that department in the store. Joseph Vincent Horbach, 63, of Manning, former owner of Gambles Store here, died unexpectedly at his home Friday evening, August 31, 1973.
Requiem mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Church at Manning, with burial in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Ohde Funeral Home here starting at 7 p.m. Saturday. The rosary will be recited Saturday at 7:30 p.m. by Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Altar Society; and Sunday at 3 p.m. and that evening at 7:30 by the Knights of Columbus. The Rev. Norbert Weber, M.S.C., will conduct Bible services at 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by American Legion Post No. 22 and V.F.W. Post No. 3517.
Mr. Horbach, a son of John and Gertrude (Fox) Horbach, was born November 2, 1909, at Templeton and attended Sacred Heart School there. He was married to Mildred Mescher February 17, 1931, and they lived in Manning, where Mr. Horbach worked at Gambles for his brother Jack, starting in 1934.
He served in the Navy in World War II, and following his discharge returned to work at Gamble's. He suffered a heart attack in 1959. In the fall of 1964 he purchased the store from his brother and sold it several years ago. He had been an invalid since suffering a stroke December 27, 1966.
Mr. Horbach was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post at Manning. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus at Templeton and Sacred Heart Church at Manning.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Donald of Omaha, Nebraska, and Robert of Athens, Georgia; six grandchildren and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Ambrose (Mary) Bierl of Dyersville; Jack of Manning; Mrs. Frank (Margaret) Muhlbauer of Manilla; Mrs. Norbert (Rita) Rupiper of Carroll; Sr. Mary Joyce of Portland, Oregon; and William of Templeton.
One grandson and a brother, Nick, preceded him in death.
