Denison Review, February 22, 1911
Roy Herman Wilhelm Sinow was born January 17, 1911, on a farm northwest of Manilla. His twin brother Raymond died when but a month old. His mother preceded him in death on October 3, 1927, and a sister, Enid passed away at birth, October 2, 1927.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his father, Robert Sinow; four sisters: Maria, Mrs. Ray Worley of Waterloo, Nebraska, Elsie, Mrs. Louie Hargens, and Helen, Mrs. Fred Hansen, both of Manning, and Miss Lillian Sinow at home; and one brother Henry at home.
Mr. Sinow was 27 years of age at the time of his death.
When a few months old he was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Manilla, Iowa. When a small child, he moved with his family to a farm north of Manning, living there almost a year. Then they moved to what is known as the home place south of Manning. He lived there until June 7, 1928, when he decided to go out and see the world.
Upon leaving Manning he went west to Colorado, where he worked on a ranch. Then he went on to Kansas City, Kansas, where he took up boxing besides working in the P&G Soap factory, Armour Meat Packing Company, and later as night watchman in the oil fields at Wichita, Kansas.
In November of 1939, he decided to settle down to some regular work, so he went to Chicago and enlisted in December in the Army. He was sent to Hawaii to serve his first three years. Starting out as a Private he worked himself up to the rank of Corporal. On receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to New York, where he enlisted for another three years' service in the Panama Canal Zone. Here he received several promotions from First Class Private to Sergeant. Having finished his term of service, he enlisted August 2, 1935, for a third term at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois, here again he started out as First Class Private and later was elevated to the rank of Sergeant.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Ohde Funeral Home with the Rev. George E. Steele in charge. Burial was made in the Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla. Military honors were accorded at the cemetery by the Emil Ewoldt Post of the American Legion.
